Yuriko Backes attended the joint "Foreign Affairs - Defence" ministerial meeting

On 7 March 2024, Defence Minister Yuriko Backes participated in a joint meeting of Foreign and Defence Ministers, held via videoconference at the initiative of the French Government, to discuss and coordinate support for Ukraine in exercising its right to self-defence.

In her speech, Yuriko Backes highlighted Luxembourg's lead nation role, alongside Estonia, in the IT coalition aimed at modernising the IT infrastructure and communications capabilities of the Ukrainian armed forces. The Minister of Defence shared the analysis that support for Ukraine requires new approaches. In this context, she announced Luxembourg's participation, within the Benelux framework, in the Czech initiative to acquire 155mm ammunition outside the European Union and announced the recent delivery by Luxembourg Defence of 6,000 155mm shells to Ukraine.
